Black Pennant Dragonfly

Description

Available in A3, A4 and A5 framed and unframed

The black pennant (Selysiothemis nigra) is a distinctive dragonfly species found in parts of southern Europe, including the Iberian Peninsula, as well as North Africa and the Middle East. This small yet striking dragonfly is easily recognized by its entirely black body and dark-tinted wings, giving it a unique appearance compared to other dragonflies that often have colorful markings. It thrives in warm, arid environments near still or slow-moving waters such as ponds, lakes, and reservoirs, where it hunts small flying insects with remarkable agility. Like other dragonflies, it undergoes an aquatic larval stage before emerging as a winged adult. The black pennant is known for its habit of perching with its wings held slightly forward, a posture that distinguishes it from many other dragonflies. Though not as common as some species, it remains widespread in suitable habitats, playing an important role in controlling insect populations and maintaining ecological balance in Mediterranean wetlands.
