The European field cricket (Gryllus campestris) is a robust, ground-dwelling insect native to Europe, including the Iberian Peninsula, where it thrives in dry grasslands, heathlands, and open meadows. Growing up to 2.5 cm in length, it has a glossy black body, long antennae, and powerful hind legs adapted for jumping. Males are well known for their loud, rhythmic chirping, produced by rubbing their forewings together in a process called stridulation. This song serves to attract females and establish territory, with males often singing from the entrance of their burrow. Nocturnal by nature, European field crickets are omnivorous, feeding on plant material, small insects, and decaying organic matter. Once widespread, their populations have declined in some regions due to habitat loss and changes in land use. Conservation efforts, including habitat restoration, have helped stabilize some populations, allowing this iconic cricket to continue its role in grassland ecosystems.
