The European mantis (Mantis religiosa) is a fascinating and well-camouflaged predatory insect found across Europe, including the Iberian Peninsula, where it thrives in warm, open habitats such as grasslands, shrublands, and gardens. Growing up to 8 cm in length, it has a slender, elongated green or brown body, triangular head, and large, compound eyes that provide excellent vision for detecting prey. Its most distinctive feature is its raptorial forelegs, which are equipped with sharp spines and used to swiftly grasp and immobilize insects, including flies, grasshoppers, and even other mantises. The European mantis is a patient ambush predator, remaining motionless and blending into vegetation before striking with lightning-fast reflexes. Mating behavior is infamous, as females sometimes consume males after copulation, although this is not as common as widely believed. Despite occasional persecution due to superstition, the European mantis is a beneficial insect, helping to regulate pest populations in agricultural and natural ecosystems.
