European Tree Frog

Description

Available in A3, A4 and A5 framed and unframed

The European tree frog (Hyla arborea) is a small but striking amphibian found across parts of Europe, including the Iberian Peninsula. Renowned for its vibrant green coloration, this frog blends seamlessly into foliage, though some individuals can exhibit shades of brown or grey depending on their environment. It grows to about 4–5 cm in length, with a slender body, large eyes, and distinctive adhesive toe pads that allow it to climb trees, shrubs, and even smooth surfaces. Unlike many frogs, the European tree frog spends much of its time in vegetation rather than in water, only returning to ponds, lakes, and wetlands during the breeding season. Males are particularly vocal, producing loud, repetitive calls on warm evenings to attract mates. Feeding mainly on insects and small invertebrates, it plays an essential role in controlling pest populations. Although still widespread, habitat destruction, climate change, and water pollution threaten some populations, making wetland conservation vital for this charismatic species’ survival.
