The hornet hoverfly (Milesia crabroniformis) is a large and impressive hoverfly species native to southern Europe, including the Iberian Peninsula, where it thrives in woodlands and gardens. As a master of mimicry, it closely resembles a hornet in both appearance and flight behavior, with a yellow and black-striped abdomen and a buzzing flight pattern that helps deter predators. Despite its intimidating look, it is completely harmless, lacking both a sting and the aggressive nature of real hornets. This hoverfly plays an important ecological role as a pollinator, feeding on nectar from flowers such as thistles and ivy. Its larvae develop in decaying wood, contributing to the decomposition process in forest ecosystems. While not as commonly seen as some other hoverflies, the hornet hoverfly is a fascinating example of Batesian mimicry, where a harmless species imitates a more dangerous one for protection.
