The migratory locust (Locusta migratoria) is a highly adaptable and widespread grasshopper species found across Europe, including the Iberian Peninsula, as well as Africa, Asia, and Australia. It is known for its ability to shift between solitary and gregarious phases, with population surges sometimes leading to massive swarms capable of devastating crops. Typically growing up to 6 cm in length, this robust insect has a brownish-green body, long hind legs adapted for powerful jumps, and large, veined wings that enable strong, sustained flight. In its solitary phase, it behaves like a typical grasshopper, but under certain environmental conditions, such as crowding and food abundance, it undergoes physiological and behavioral changes, forming dense swarms that migrate over long distances in search of food. The migratory locust primarily feeds on grasses and cereal crops, making it a significant agricultural pest when populations explode. Although modern pest control measures have reduced its impact in many areas, it remains one of the most formidable and studied insect species due to its potential for large-scale outbreaks.
