Moorish Gecko

Description

Available in A3, A4 and A5 framed and unframed

The Moorish gecko (Tarentola mauritanica) is a hardy, nocturnal reptile native to the Mediterranean region, including the Iberian Peninsula and North Africa. It thrives in a variety of habitats, from rocky outcrops and woodlands to urban areas, where it is often seen clinging to walls and ceilings. This small but robust gecko grows up to 15 cm in length and has a distinctive rough, bumpy skin covered in tubercles, giving it a prehistoric appearance. Its coloration ranges from grey to brown, helping it blend into its surroundings during the day. Like other geckos, it possesses specialized toe pads that allow it to climb vertical surfaces with ease. A skilled nocturnal hunter, the Moorish gecko primarily feeds on insects such as moths, spiders, and beetles. While it is harmless to humans, it plays a vital role in controlling pest populations. When threatened, it can shed its tail as a defense mechanism, later regenerating it. Its adaptability and resilience have made it a common and beneficial species throughout its range.
