Ocellated Lizard

Description

Available in A3, A4 and A5 framed and unframed

The ocellated lizard (Timon lepidus) is one of Europe’s largest and most striking lizards, native to the Iberian Peninsula and parts of southern France. It can grow up to 90 cm in length, with a robust body covered in vibrant green scales adorned with blue, eye-like spots (ocelli) along its sides, which give the species its name. Preferring dry, open habitats such as scrublands, rocky outcrops, and woodland edges, this diurnal reptile is an agile climber and a powerful predator. It has a varied diet, feeding on insects, small vertebrates, fruits, and even carrion. Despite its size and strength, the ocellated lizard faces threats from habitat loss and predation, particularly from birds of prey and mammals. While it can be aggressive when cornered, using its strong jaws to deliver a painful bite, it is an important part of Mediterranean ecosystems, helping to regulate insect and small vertebrate populations.
