The Old World swallowtail (Papilio machaon) is a striking and widespread butterfly found across Europe, including the Iberian Peninsula, as well as parts of Asia and North Africa. One of the most recognizable butterflies, it boasts large, bright yellow wings adorned with black markings and distinctive “swallowtails” extending from the hindwings. These tails, along with the blue and red eyespots near the wing edges, serve as a defense mechanism, confusing predators. With a wingspan of up to 9 cm, the Old World swallowtail is a strong and agile flyer, often seen gliding over meadows, grasslands, and mountainous regions. Its caterpillars feed on plants from the carrot family (Apiaceae), including fennel and parsley, while the adults prefer nectar from flowers. The species has multiple generations per year in warmer climates, while in cooler regions, it overwinters as a chrysalis. Although generally common, habitat destruction and climate change threaten some populations, making conservation of wildflower-rich habitats essential for this beautiful butterfly’s survival.
