Portuguese Fire Salamander (Yellow/Black)

Description

Available in A3, A4 and A5 framed and unframed

The Portuguese fire salamander (Salamandra salamandra gallaica) is a striking subspecies of the fire salamander, native to Portugal and parts of western Spain. It thrives in humid forests, woodlands, and near freshwater sources such as streams and ponds, where it breeds. This robust amphibian can grow up to 25 cm in length and is easily recognized by its glossy black body adorned with vivid yellow markings, which serve as a warning to predators of its toxic skin secretions. Unlike some other salamander species, it gives birth to live larvae rather than laying eggs, depositing them in clean, slow-moving water where they develop into terrestrial adults. Primarily nocturnal, the Portuguese fire salamander hides under logs, rocks, or leaf litter during the day, emerging at night to hunt insects, worms, and other invertebrates. Although relatively common, it faces threats from habitat destruction, pollution, and the spread of chytrid fungus, making the conservation of its forested and freshwater habitats essential for its survival.
