The western three-toed skink (Chalcides striatus) is a unique, burrowing reptile native to the Iberian Peninsula and parts of southern France. Unlike most lizards, it has an elongated, snake-like body with only small, vestigial limbs, each bearing three tiny toes. This adaptation allows it to move efficiently through loose soil, leaf litter, and dense vegetation, much like a worm or snake. Typically measuring up to 30 cm in length, its smooth, shiny scales range in color from golden-brown to grey, often with faint dark stripes running along its body. A secretive and slow-moving species, the western three-toed skink spends much of its life hidden underground, emerging mainly to hunt small invertebrates such as insects and worms. It gives birth to live young rather than laying eggs, an adaptation that helps it thrive in cooler environments. Although rarely seen due to its burrowing lifestyle, it is an important part of Mediterranean ecosystems, contributing to soil aeration and controlling insect populations.
