The Bosca’s newt (Lissotriton boscai), also known as the Iberian newt, is a small, semi-aquatic amphibian endemic to the Iberian Peninsula, where it inhabits a range of wet environments, including ponds, slow-moving streams, and damp woodlands. Growing up to 10 cm in length, it has a slender body with smooth, dark brown or olive-green skin, sometimes speckled with lighter markings, and a yellow to orange underside. Unlike some other newt species, Bosca’s newt lacks the prominent crests seen in breeding males, but it does develop a slightly more pronounced tail fin during the breeding season. It is mostly nocturnal and feeds on small invertebrates such as insects, worms, and aquatic larvae. Though it is relatively widespread, habitat destruction, pollution, and climate change pose threats to its populations. Conservation efforts focusing on preserving freshwater habitats are essential to ensuring the continued survival of this unique Iberian amphibian.
