European Hornet

Description

Available in A3, A4 and A5 framed and unframed

The European hornet (Vespa crabro) is the largest social wasp native to Europe, including the Iberian Peninsula, and parts of Asia. Growing up to 3.5 cm in length, it has a distinctive yellow and brown-striped abdomen, a robust reddish-brown thorax, and large, powerful mandibles. Unlike smaller wasps, the European hornet is more tolerant of human presence and is less aggressive unless provoked. It builds large, papery nests in hollow trees, wall cavities, and even attics, using chewed wood fibers. As a predator, it plays a vital role in ecosystems by controlling insect populations, feeding on flies, bees, and caterpillars. It also scavenges fallen fruit and tree sap. Although it can deliver a painful sting, it is generally not dangerous unless its nest is disturbed. Despite its fearsome reputation, the European hornet is beneficial to the environment, and its populations are increasingly threatened by habitat loss and pesticide use.
