Description

Available in A3, A4 and A5 framed and unframed

The ladder snake (Zamenis scalaris) is a non-venomous colubrid native to the Iberian Peninsula and parts of southern France, thriving in warm, dry habitats such as scrublands, woodlands, and farmland. It gets its name from the distinctive dark ladder-like markings that run along the backs of juveniles, though these fade in adults, leaving two parallel dark stripes on a light brown or yellowish body. Growing up to 1.6 meters in length, the ladder snake is a skilled climber and an opportunistic hunter, preying on small mammals, birds, reptiles, and large insects. It is primarily active at dusk and dawn, using its keen sense of smell and quick reflexes to capture prey. Although it is harmless to humans, when threatened, it may hiss loudly, inflate its body, or deliver non-venomous bites in self-defense. Despite facing some threats from habitat loss and road mortality, the ladder snake remains widespread and plays an essential role in controlling rodent populations in Mediterranean ecosystems.
