Mediterranean Grass Snake (Juvenile)

Description

Available in A3, A4 and A5 framed and unframed

The Mediterranean grass snake (Natrix astreptophora) is a non-venomous, semi-aquatic snake native to the Iberian Peninsula and parts of southern France. Closely related to the common grass snake (Natrix natrix), it thrives in wetland habitats, riverbanks, and humid woodlands, where it preys primarily on amphibians such as frogs and toads. Growing up to 1.5 meters in length, this slender snake is typically olive-green or greyish-brown with a distinctive red or orange iris, which sets it apart from other grass snake species. When threatened, it employs defensive tactics such as playing dead, emitting a foul-smelling musk, or flattening its head to appear more intimidating. Despite its harmless nature, the Mediterranean grass snake is sometimes mistaken for a venomous species and persecuted by humans. However, it plays a crucial ecological role in maintaining amphibian populations and remains a widespread and adaptable reptile in Mediterranean ecosystems.
