The vagrant emperor (Anax ephippiger) is a migratory dragonfly species found across Europe, including the Iberian Peninsula, as well as Africa, the Middle East, and parts of Asia. It is a strong and relentless flyer, capable of long-distance migrations, often appearing unpredictably far from its usual breeding grounds. This medium-to-large dragonfly has a slender, sandy-brown body with a distinctive blue saddle-like marking on the males’ abdomen, which gives the species its name. Unlike many other dragonflies, the vagrant emperor does not always rely on standing water for breeding, as its larvae can develop in temporary water bodies, making it highly adaptable. Adults are powerful hunters, preying on flying insects such as mosquitoes and small butterflies while in continuous flight. Due to its nomadic nature, this species frequently turns up in unexpected locations, even as far north as the UK. Climate change and habitat availability influence its movement patterns, but it remains a resilient and fascinating species within the dragonfly world.
